PLANTING HOPE IN PALESTINE

Trees for Life is a program of the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA) that provides thousands of olive trees to first-time and small scale farmers, as well as to those whose trees or lands have been destroyed by Israeli forces. Since 2006, they have planted over 343,373 trees!

ROOTING RESISTANCE

Now you can plant an olive tree and advocate for Palestinian rights! Since 2010, our friends at the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights have partnered with the PFTA to plant over 25,000 olive trees across Palestine. Your $25 donation plants an olive tree in Palestine and helps USCPR advocate for freedom, justice, and equality for the Palestinian people.

OLIVES AND ALMONDS

While Palestine is known for its olive trees, another tree that has been cultivated for centuries, and shares the rocky terraces in Palestine is the almond tree.

Palestine has grown superb almonds for centuries, and it’s common for Palestinian farmers to cultivate almond trees among their olive trees. Palestine's sun and rich soil is perfect for almonds known for their large size, crunchy texture and sweet flavor.

Almonds are shelled and eaten raw, and farmers are quite likely to peel a handful to share with a visitor.

Canaan Fair Trade is growing a world market for almonds from Palestine. Almonds are used as ingredients for other foods, or are pressed fresh into almond oil for cooking and cosmetics. PFTA women’s cooperatives hull them for pressing or sun drying, and the almond husks are ground and used as nutritious flour for bread and biscuit making. Nothing is wasted in Palestine!

HOW IT WORKS

A committee of PFTA farmers administers the program. Applicants must qualify for lots of 25-50 trees. They must have suitable land, the capacity to nurture the trees, fields prepared for planting immediately upon delivery, and a commitment to fair trade practices.

Priority for olive trees goes to young families and starter farmers, small scale farmers, women farmers, and farmers who have lost trees to the Israeli occupation and destruction. Priority for almond trees goes to small and large farmers wanting to increase their production of almonds.

WHEN TREES ARE PLANTED

Olive and almond trees are typically planted between Tree Day, January 15, and Land Day, March 30.

An average PFTA smallholder farmer has 360 olive trees. The Trees for Life program has a huge impact on the farmers, thanks to you! Together, we keep Palestine alive. 2023 Trees for Life Report. Contact us for past years Trees for Life reports.
