Intercropping legumes under olive trees in Palestine

Intercropping legumes under olive trees in Palestine

Field crops in Palestine (grains and legumes) currently produce less than 5% of the local need, but Palestine used to be a bread basket for the world. You are bringing this back to Palestine. Regenerative agriculture practices make healthy top soil by keeping an active biological ecosystem year round. Healthy soil increases the soil’s capacity to store carbon which allows better moisture retention. This is perfect for intercropping - planting native legumes in Palestinian olive and almond orchards.

Landrace seeds are ancient native seeds. They are drought resistant, don't need fertilizer, and are resistant to pests and diseases. Plus, their produce is nutrient dense and preferred by the knowledgeable consumer.

Thanks to your gifts, PFTA purchases native seeds from organic farmers’ own production and then redistributes the seeds to new farmers, who repeat the process. With your help, they completed Phase 6 of building a sustainable Organic Seed Production System. Since 2018 you have:

  • benefited 398 farmers with food and economic security

  • distributed a total of 29,197 kg of seeds

  • in a total of 79 villlages
